Whenever the words telling the tales about cleanliness, swachhata, safai emerges in anywhere in India, the name of Dr. S. K. Saikia emerges. Dr. S. K. Saikia is a noteworthy name in the field of cleanliness and he has sincerely done and is continuously doing a lot in this field by spreading cleanliness awareness programmes around the state in various places.
Dr. S. K Saikia is the renowned name for the Green Club of DHS Kanoi College and Environmental Movement which he started after joining DHSK College in 19th June 2015 as the Pricipal of the College. His ultimate devotion towards the protection of nature and his aim to preserve the beauty and excellency of this prestigious college led him to initiate a revolutionary step by forming the Green Club of DHSK College and Environmental Movement.
The Green Club of DHSK College and Environmental Movement led to the initiation of various cleanliness works every morning from as early as 5 am everyday under his guidance inside the DHSK College campus.
No Holidays! No Sundays! No Summers! No Winters! No Hot! No Cold! No Rainfall! Yes, the cleanliness works are conducted everyday and, that too he does this with his utmost dedication as a government servant. And yes, he has done it for more than 2200 (Two Thousand Two Hundred) days till July 2021, and still continuing.
Dr. Sashi Kanta Saikia is the Brand Ambassador of Swachh Bharat Mission Assam (NAMASTE States) and Karma Surjya- 2020 Title Recipient. He is also a renowned Educationist, Paramananda Manab Sewa Ratna Award Winner, Seuj Ratna Award recipient, Best Principal Performance Award recipient, State’s popular social worker, and an adept Column Writer in various vernacular dailies and daily newspapers. Hon’ble prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi ji had nominated His Excellency to the Governor of Nagaland Shri P.B. Acharaya ji as one of the National Brand Ambassadors for Swachh Bharat Mission.
Subsequently, Shri P.B. Acharaya ji has appointed Sotai Kri who was the advisor of Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh as the Convenor cum Brand Ambassador of Swachh Bharat Mission for “North East NAMASTE States Swachh Bharat Mission” Committee.
According to the valuable service towards the social sector, Dr. Sashi Kanta Saikia was appointed as the Brand Ambassador of Assam (NAMASTE States). He can recommend 25 member committee under District and sub-Division each.
Dr. S.K. Saikia as Brand Ambassador of the Assam state in coordination with other members of the committee works in proper cooperation to drive cleanliness, swachhata, and safai awareness throughout the Assam state (INDIA).
Massive Swachhata Awareness Campign at Harishpur Tea Estate, Doomdoma – Assam
On 15th August 2019, the Dibrugarh district administration declared Harishpur T.E as the 1st Zero Waste Tea Estate.
Harishpur T.E was established in the 1st part of the 20th Century (about 1915-20). Today, after several family partitions, it is having 220ha area. Approximately, 1000 people are living in the estate and several Co-Farmers are coming from neighboring villages within 5km radius.
Harishpur had started cleanliness programmes (SWACHHATA ABHIYAAN) since 2011, which spread to its peripheral villages from where the CO- FARMERS come. In the year 2016, this garden was declared as Open Defecation Free. Several visits were paid by PHE officials, UNICEF volunteers and others to make the effort successful.
Dr. S.K.Saikia (Brand Ambassador Swachh Bharat Misson NAMASTE State) also paid a visit to encourage the activities that are being undertaken. He declared that Harishpur T.E is very active in the case of Environmental Safety.
According to him and other authorities, it’s declared that Harishpur T.E. was following these innovative steps in maintaining a clean and green environment. The steps that were followed by them were Rainwater harvesting, Recharging groundwater, Solar geysers for preheating of water for tea & fodders, Solar lights, man-made forest & lake for biodiversity and improvements of microclimatic conditions, Composting and uses of biodegradable waste, etc. They have also put emphasize on renewal, reuse. recycle and refuse of non-bio degradable waste specifically single-use plastics.
Swachh Bharat Abhiyan under the leadership of Dr. Sashi Kanta Saikia:
Dr. Sashi Kanta Saikia has appointed many district brand ambassadors and city convenors to spread the swachhata awareness amongst the people.
Under his leadership, the following things were achieved:
- Monoranjan Sarma, Tinsukia District Brand Ambassador, and his team have been working continuously for about 1000+ days and still continuing in maintaining a neat and clean Tinsukia.
- Kumud Baruah an Advocate who is also the District Brand Ambassador of Biswnath Chariali, Assam has done a lot in maintaining the cleanliness awareness amongst the people.
- Dr. Anil Saikia, Jorhat District Brand Ambassador, has greatly contributed to spreading the Swachhata Awareness in the various rural areas of Jorhat, Assam.
- People had now urged to take an active part in Swachhta Mission at Dibrugarh and in many districts of Assam. All thanks to the whole Swachhata Awareness team and the public.
- Under the leadership of Dr. S. K. Saikia Rastriya Swaccha Bharat Puraskar, 2017 was awarded and was felicitated by SOFEC to Dr. S. K. Saikia for his outstanding contribution to DHSK College.
- National award for Swach Bharat Puraskar to DHSK College by Central Govt. in 2017.
- For the active involvement of Dr. S.K. Saikia, the DHSK College, Dibrugarh had received the Swachchhata Puraskar 2018 by Dibrugarh District Administration and Dibrugarh Municipal Board.
- Safai Abhijan at Bogibeel Bridge on February 11, 2019. Preserving the newly inaugurated Asia’s Longest Bridge over Mighty Brahmaputra from being a dumping zone, the members of Dibrugarh University Research Scholar Association (DURSA) undertook this cleanliness drive, in presence of Deputy Commissioner, Sri Pallav Gopal Jha; the Joint Registrar (Academic) of DU, Dr. Binod Borah; DHS Kanoi College Principal and State Ambassador Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM), Sri. Sashi Kanta Saikia; Scientist and Big Data Analyst from Munich, Germany, Dr. Tabiyas Arhad; President of Gaurav Sanmilito Samaj, Bhaskarjyoti Baruah and Secretary of GSS, Sri Pranjit Kalita; DU Professor, Dr. Pradip Kumar Bhuyan; Former Professor, Dr. Nirmali Bhuyan; Dr. Upasana Bhuyan; Professor of Kanoi College, Dr. Nitumoni Saikia; Professor Krishnakshi Saikia, Sri Ujjal Kalita; Members of Green Club of Kanoi College, Apurba Sarmah, Ronit Dey and Anupam Dutta.
- On 4 April 2019 Swachhata Awareness program was conducted at DHSK College, KC Gogoi Path under the presence of Dr. Sashi Kanta Saikia(Swachh Bharat Abhiyan Brand Ambassador-Assam), Dilip Kumar Singh(Swachh Bharat Assam Dibrugarh District Convenor), DHSK College Green Club members and Girls Hostel boarders. A German tourist named Max Kolbe was present together. That tourist actively took part in the cleanliness program.

Dr. Sashi Kanta Saikia sir not only pays a visit to these various swachhata drives all around the state but also actively takes part in the cleanliness Abhiyan with the people.
He along with other officials has already conducted many awareness programs. The recent was in North-Guwahati College, Bogibeeel Bridge, Doomdoma, Harishpur Tea Estate and many more.
